Since 1937, Shur-Gain has been delivering animal feeds to poultry, swine and dairy producers. We have been transferring that knowledge to solve specific problems in the aquaculture industry since 1987.

 A big thrust of Shur-Gain research is in the area of ingredient quality. To ensure that only the best quality ingredients are used in our fish feeds, we continue to develop improved chemical, physical and biological methods to assess and monitor the quality of our ingredients. To lessen the dependence on fish meal, Shur-Gain is actively researching the use of alternative sources of protein. These sources must be found to have no negative effect on the palatability, digestibility and protein quality of salmonid feeds, or on the growth performance of the fish.

Pigments - a big cost in the feed ration – have been at the fore of Shur-Gain research. We are currently developing methods to reduce the loss of pigments during extrusion as well as the evaluation of different pigmentation strategies.

We are also fine-tuning a growth simulation model which will predict growth based on smolt size, water temperature, water quality, stocking density, disease incidence, medical treatments and feed specifications.  The model will also help growers estimate daily feed consumption and requirements.

Shur-Gain has dedicated research efforts to support Salmon producers in producing the highest yielding fish resulting in top quality, lean fillets with optimum colour. Feeding programs must be properly balanced for local genotypes and area conditions.
