Quality Assurance & Process Control Enhancements

Shur-Gain Aquaculture is committed to being an industry leader, producing the highest quality feeds possible. Shur-Gain manufactures feeds in compliance with the Canadian Feeds Act and Feed Regulations. All Shur-Gain plants are routinely inspected by the Canadian Feed Inspection Agency (CFIA). As well, the Shur-Gain fish feed plant attained HACCP accreditation in 2001, and has subsequently undergone annual re-certification.

In cooperation with our sister company Landmark Feeds, Shur-Gain has implemented an ongoing Near Infra Red Program (NIR). Dr. Tracy Gilson, Director NIR Technology Research leads the Program. The purpose of this program is to develop and refine the use of NIR technology in company Quality Assurance and Process Control functions.

The necessary equations for fish feed have been developed specifically for Shur-Gain aquaculture rations. At present, a NIR instrument with these equations is in use at our Truro, Nova Scotia fish feed plant. This allows all production runs of fish feed to be analyzed with respect to levels of protein, fat, moisture, and minerals. This information is used to provide ship/no ship feedback for each lot of feed manufactured.
